LASIK is popular eye surgery, but it isn’t for everyone. Which is why one local woman is seeking a more recent alternative to cure her vision woes.
Nicole Black’s nearsightedness is too severe for LASIK to fix. So instead, she looks to a newer procedure that will put lenses into her eyes. “I have had contacts and glasses forever, since I was a kid so I definitely would like a different change,” Black smiled.
Since Black isn’t a good candidate for LASIK, she’s hoping Implantable Contact Lens surgery, or ICLs , will allow her to kiss those contacts good-bye.
Ophthalmologist Thomas Wyman of the Illinois Eye Center said, “LASIK works wonderfully well for people in the low to moderate nearsightedness, but if you’re very nearsighted, your going to have to have an ICL procedure.”
While LASIK and ICL are both surgical procedure, ICL requires doctors to place lenses directly into the eyes. “It involves actually implanting a lens between the colored portion of the eye which would be the iris, and the natural lens of the eye”, said Wyman.
The lenses will stay in permanently, unless they need to be removed. The procedure takes only 15 minutes, and doctors say the benefits are powerful.
