Implantable Contact Lenses: For Those Who Aren’t Candidates for LASIK

The implantable contact lens (ICL) is a refractive lens that can correct vision for patients with high levels of nearsightedness or astigmatism. This procedure may be an excellent alternative for patients who have been told that LASIK is not an option. Think of ICLs as semi-permanent contact lenses placed inside the eye to add focusing power. Unlike traditional contact lenses that are placed on the surface of the eye, the ICL is surgically inserted into the eye, providing excellent vision for a wide range of corrective needs.

Good candidates for ICL:

  • Have extreme to moderate nearsightedness or astigmatism
  • Have thin corneas
  • Have a history of dry eye
  • Are between the ages of 21 and 40
  • Are not good candidates for LASIK

The surgical procedure to implant the ICL is simple and painless. Before the procedure begins, you’ll receive a light topical or local anesthetic, and a mild sedative if needed. Then, the eye surgeon makes a micro-incision that allows the implant to be inserted behind the cornea. Each lens is specifically selected for focusing power that matches the eye’s needs and is carefully positioned. The opening into the eye is very small and heals quickly. One eye is treated at a time in a procedure that usually takes 15 minutes or less. The day after surgery, you will return to your eye surgeon for a follow-up visit. Recovery is quick and you can resume your favorite activities in just a few short days.

ICLs provide a new level of vision quality that’s sharper, clearer and more vivid than the quality of vision provided by glasses or contact lenses. Additionally, patients live without the dryness and irritation that sometimes comes with wearing contact lenses.
