What is an optometrist?
Optometrists are doctors of optometry (OD) who provide primary vision care. Though they are not medical doctors, they are well-educated to provide services such as vision testing and correction. Additionally, they are skilled in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of vision changes. In Illinois, optometrists may prescribe medication for certain eye diseases.
The team at Illinois Eye Center includes knowledgeable optometrists who work closely with our ophthalmologists to provide complete vision care for our patients.
Care provided by our optometrists includes:
- Management of non-surgical conditions (such as dry eye disease, conjunctivitis, diabetic eye exams, corneal scratches, foreign body sensation in the eye, etc.)
- Management of refractive errors (astigmatism, diplopia, myopia, presbyopia, etc.)
- Prescribing and fitting of any ophthalmic lenses including contact lenses
- Prescribing eyeglasses
- Routine eye exams
- Urgent, same-day eye exams
