Optical Department

Once upon a time, glasses were strictly functional-and many of us have the old-school pictures to prove it. Today, eyewear is at the forefront of fashion with major designers creating incredible styles worn by everyone from A-list celebrities to people just like you. The Optical Departments at the Illinois Eye Center desire to give our patients the best eyewear options possible, so you can look and feel fantastic each and every day.

Showcase your personality with eyeglass frames that fit your face and your image. Choose from popular brands like L.A.M.B., Coach, Calvin Klein, and Ted Baker. Or choose from quality private brands such as Silhouette and ProDesign.

Don’t forget to update your sun wear while you’re here, with name brand frame and lenses with or without your prescription, like Nike, Ray Ban, and Maui Jim.

After a visit with your eye doctor, you will be instructed to see one of the opticians at Illinois Eye Center.

What is an Optician?

An optician is certified to dispense frames and lenses from prescriptions issued by optometrists and ophthalmologists. Specifically, opticians analyze and interpret prescriptions, determining the best lens options for wearers’ needs based on the patient’s occupation and hobbies. The optician prepares and delivers work orders for the grinding of lenses and fabrication of eyewear. Opticians are trained to adjust, repair, and replace previously prepared ophthalmic lenses, frames, and other specially fabricated devices.

Board-Certified Opticians

With technology in optics rapidly changing, our board-certified opticians will guide you through the process and provide you with information on the latest technology available. Our opticians have ABO (American Board of Opticianry) certification. ABO certification means that our opticians have passed national testing with continuing education, and are knowledgeable and qualified to handle your eye care needs with competence. Let our opticians assist you in selecting the right frame and lens type for you and your entire family today.

If you have optician training and are interested in working with our Illinois Eye Center team, please visit our employment section.

Lens Technology

There are many options to consider when looking at prescription lenses. One of our certified opticians will help you choose a lens solution that works best for your eyewear needs.

Single Vision

If you have a vision problem that can be easily corrected with a single vision lens, then a traditional lens may be the most cost-effective solution for you. Our single vision lenses are more precise than ever, giving you the ability to focus very intently on objects in your visual cue without over-straining your eyes or your body for distance only, intermediate distances only, or near fields only.

Lined Multifocal

You can also choose a traditional multifocal look that corrects more than one vision problem. You may know these glasses by their colloquial name of “bifocals” or “trifocals” depending on the number of vision problems that you are trying to correct. For instance, if you are having trouble viewing things in your near and far fields of vision, bifocals are the natural solution for you. A trifocal will correct your vision for distance, intermediate and near. These are the more traditional offerings in our inventory; however, even they have been upgraded to help create a more effective tool for your lifestyle, no matter what that lifestyle may be.

Free Form Progressives

Free-form progressive lenses allow you to personalize your lens power to 1/100th of your prescription and takes into consideration the fit of the frame that you have selected as well. This improves your visual acuity and gives you the ability to create a style and keep the functionality of your lens in top form.

If you are dealing with complex visual problems, free-form progressive lenses will also reduce the distortion you’ve put up with in the past. This reduction in distortion also improves the clarity in your lenses.

Note: Freeform/digital lenses are available in a variety of single vision and progressive lens styles.

Full Progressives

Full progressive lenses give you the ability to clear away multiple vision problems just like the classic multifocal lens. However, you do not have to deal with the lines that are in the traditional bifocal/ trifocal; your glasses look as smooth as if they were single vision lenses.

The full progressive lens responds to your needs when it comes to changing fields of vision: distance, several intermediate distances, and near. This gives you the functionality of a trifocal lens with the look of a single vision lens. In addition, progressive lenses have shown to be a better alternative than traditional lenses for many people who find themselves in front of a computer for the majority of the day or those who enjoy watching their favorite programs on a 60- inch big screen TV at home.

Occupational Needs

Occupational lenses benefit those with specific occupational needs.

A perfect customized solution whether you need to concentrate on close work at the computer while keeping near surrounding precisely in focus, or if you work at the computer while also focusing on mid-distance workspace.

A computer lens offers an excellent option for close and mid-distance vision with an optimal depth of field up to 5 feet. The computer lens is for those focused on immediate surroundings.

  • Great for musicians, accountants, and data entry clerks.

A workplace lens is the best solution when priority is both mid-distance and near viewing with optimal depth of field up to 10 feet.

  • Great for nurses, chefs, and receptionists.

Ask about protecting your visual health with bluelight defensive lenses that protect your eyes from the potential harm of natural and artificial light sources present in our everyday lives, like: computer screens, smart phones, tablets, and more.

Bluelight defensive lenses block up to 3 times more harmful blue light than an ordinary clear lens.

To give you best results try anti-reflective lenses to virtually eliminate all reflections from the front and back surface of your lenses. Without reflection, more light is able to pass through your lenses to optimize your vision.
